Reusable bottle systems are becoming increasingly common in hotels. Instead of providing a new disposable bottle for every guest, bottles can be collected, cleaned, refilled and returned to guest rooms as part of a controlled in-house process.
This approach can reduce packaging waste and support a more circular use of materials. At the same time, it introduces a practical question for hotel operations:
How can housekeeping staff tell whether a bottle has remained untouched since it was cleaned, refilled and checked by the hotel?
When a reusable bottle leaves the controlled process
Within the hotel’s filling process, responsibilities are clearly defined. Bottles are collected, cleaned, refilled and prepared for their next use by authorized staff.
Once a bottle has been placed in a guest room, however, the situation changes. A bottle may be opened, partially consumed, refilled and returned to its original place.
From its appearance alone, housekeeping staff may not always be able to determine whether the bottle is still in the condition in which it was originally placed in the room.
This is particularly relevant for reuse concepts: Refilling is intentional – but it should take place within the controlled process.
Making unauthorized refilling visible
A tamper-evident security label can add a physical opening indication to the reuse process.
After the bottle has been cleaned and refilled by authorized hotel staff, a new security label is applied across the closure. When the bottle is opened, the label visibly and irreversibly destroys itself.
Once triggered, it cannot simply be reapplied to make the bottle appear untouched. Housekeeping staff therefore have a clear visual indication that the bottle has been opened since it was last prepared by the hotel.
The security label leaves no residue on the bottle, allowing the bottle to be cleaned and returned to the reuse cycle.
A new security label for every refill cycle
The concept can be integrated into an existing hotel reuse process. After every controlled cleaning and refilling cycle, a new security label is applied. The reusable bottle remains in circulation, while the opening indicator is renewed for each use.
This creates a clear distinction between controlled refilling by authorized hotel staff and opening outside the controlled process.
Additional application: The same principle can also be used for originally sealed beverages in hotel minibars. Security seals can provide visible evidence if a bottle or other packaged product has already been opened or tampered with.
