Germany: More than 3.5 tonnes of counterfeit printer cartridges intercepted

October 2026 | Electronics & Consumables

German customs authorities in Nuremberg reported the seizure and destruction of more than 3.5 tonnes of counterfeit printer cartridges. The shipment attracted attention because of an unusual transportation route through Türkiye. Further checks revealed missing import documentation.

Customs contacted the relevant rights holder, who confirmed that the products infringed intellectual property rights. The stopped shipments had an estimated sales value of approximately €250,000.

Why this matters
Counterfeit consumables can enter markets through complex international distribution routes.

Security perspective
Secure product identification, authentication and traceability can provide additional tools for verifying whether products originate from authorized manufacturing and distribution channels.

For consumables, combining unique identities with tamper-evident features may also help reveal packaging manipulation or unauthorized replacement.
